THE ORIGIN STORY

Before there was MoPOP, there was one big, electrified dream: the Jimi Hendrix Museum. In the early 1990s, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen envisioned a space in Seattle that would honor Hendrix’s hometown roots, psychedelic sound, and creative genius. He imagined galleries, music labs, live performances, and experimental exhibitions, all pulsing with boundary-breaking energy. The original blueprint sketched six sonic galleries spanning jazz, R&B, blues, and rock’n’roll, with Sky Church, a Hendrix coinage, as its spiritual heart. That vision evolved to make space for more artists, sounds, and voices. But Jimi’s spirit never left the building.

When the Museum of Pop Culture opened in the year 2000, it carried Hendrix’s DNA in its walls. Twenty-five years later, it is still a house of memory, a cathedral of the unexpected, a keeper of the culture’s wildest dreams. And Hendrix is still at its heart. The museum’s permanent exhibition, Wild Blue Angel: Hendrix Abroad, 1966–70, immerses visitors in Jimi’s world through rare interview clips, artifacts, artwork, and the story of a musical nomad who performed more than 500 times in 15 countries and recorded 130 songs in 16 studios between 1966 and 1970.

For the 25th anniversary, MoPOP went back to the beginning. Most Incredible Studio partnered with the museum and Authentic Hendrix, the official family company charged with managing Hendrix’s name, likeness, image, and music, to create Mini Jimi: a limited edition Cultural Composition that transforms Jimi into something you can build, hold, and proudly display. The composition captures everything that made Hendrix unmistakable: the curls, the stance, the iconic guitar flipped upside down, a Marshall stack, and a buildable Stratocaster. Every element was crafted to echo the restless, brilliant fire that lit up the world.

This was not a replication. It was an invocation. Before the festivals, before the roaring crowds, before the legend, there was Seattle. A young boy, guitar in hand, growing roots in a city whose rhythms would seep into his bloodstream. Jimi Hendrix was shaped by Seattle’s rain-soaked resilience, its collisions of tradition and rebellion, its restless yearning for something new. He was not merely a musician. He was a portal, a bridge between the known and the unknown. Every note he pulled from his guitar stitched new colors into the fabric of music itself. Half a century later, the chords he strung together still thrum beneath the skin of modern music.

Mini Jimi was released exclusively at the MoPOP museum shop with proceeds supporting the museum’s exhibitions, preservation work, youth education, and programming. MoPOP members could reserve online. This is the first MIS composition created for an institutional museum partner, sold inside the museum itself, and it represents a new model for how cultural institutions can extend their mission through brick-built collectibles. As the booklet reads: “We are not simply keepers of history. We are co-authors of what comes next.”

Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) — Born in Seattle, Washington. Widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in history. A left-handed player who played a right-handed Fender Stratocaster flipped upside down, creating a sound and visual signature that became inseparable from his identity. His music fused rock, blues, jazz, and psychedelia into something entirely new. His concept of “Sky Church” envisioned a communal, creative future where music could unite people across all boundaries.
