Flying Durag

Waves don't happen by accident. Somebody brushed. Somebody wrapped. Somebody tied the knot in the back without looking, because the hands already knew. In the morning, when it comes off, the evidence is right there. The pattern. The depth. The 360s that say somebody put in time.

There's a science to it. Silk over velvet over polyester. Brush count. The wave check that isn't for the mirror, it's for the room. And some don't take it off in the morning at all. The durag comes off the nightstand and goes on like a piece of the fit. Strings hanging loose, not tucked, not hidden.

Flying.

They tried to put an end to it. Schools banned it. Dress codes outlawed it. Restaurants put up signs. But the durag kept flying. That's the thing about culture. It doesn't disappear because someone decides it should.

The deepest wave pattern is called a 360. All the way around. No beginning, no end.

In our hands, we hold the durag. In our hands, we hold the wave.
